Single image HDR processing can be very successful. At the point of capture there are a few things to consider.
Shoot in RAW to capture as much information as possible.
Capture the light avoiding, as best you can, clipping in both the shadows and highlights. Use your histogram.
Low to medium contrast subjects have the best chance to be successful. (But as you can see from the images above, you never know.)

Hey, just came across your blog. ( I'll be subscribing ). I've tried to create a HDR image using one RAW file but it seems when I generate in Photomatix the colours go crazy and the noise is mental. Any tips?
